22 October 2007 - 3:48Your phone # on your site might save you.

Several years ago I had some do-gooder, trying to rid the world of Spam.  He assumed my ezine, OyesUcan, was the enemy and was going to expose my wrong doings to the internet world.  It didn’t matter that people were opting into my newsletter; to him it was still spamming.

To justify his attack on my business this guy chose to pick up the phone and call what he thought was going to be a fake phone number listed on my contact us web page.

Now the truth is I really do run a home business (with 5 children I would not do it any other way).  And this guy chose to call at dinner time.  So here I am standing over the stove, children noise in the back ground and answering my business phone.

This is how the conversation went.

Valerie:  Hello this is Valerie
do-gooder:  I hear children!
Valerie:  Yes, OyesUcan is a home based business, sorry for the noise, how can I help you.
do-gooder: (sounding confused) But this is an overseas spamming operation.
Valerie:  No I am a real person running a real business.

The conversation went on for a bit and ended politely, although I did later find a forum post with some unkind things said about me and our conversation.

The point is having my phone number may have saved some much worse attacks on my website had this do-gooder not talked to a person that day.

If you are running a real business, post your contact information.  It is part of running a professional business.

22 October 2007 - 3:47Are You a Million Dollar Deal Junkie?

What is the difference between a millionaire and a million dollar deal junkie?

The millionaire keeps his focus on what pays -
The junkie pays for his lack of focus.

The Test - does this sound like you? If so you might be a Million Dollar Deal Junkie?

The magic number seems to be two hours a night. Just give your Internet business two hours a night and that million dollars can’t help but start rolling in.

You are committed and sit down at your desk every night. This is time to focus on your Internet business. This isn’t your day job, YET, but you are determined to learn fast and make it work. Everyone else is making millions, just read their testimonial.

I can do this. I know I can.

Its evening and you diligently close yourself into your little home office to begin building an empire.

Your keyboard is heating up as you check your affiliate accounts and take a look into your back offices. You do a little web surfing to see what is going on with others selling your same products.

An article catches your attention ‘Proven - Powerful - make money faster’ so you read on. You are lead to a handy dandy tool that you know will to make your programs sell faster. You click that BUY NOW button and enter your Paypal info.

In taking a closer look at your new tool you soon realize you can make big money if you sell it. So you spend a good amount of time learning everything about this new program. You even found an E-book for $19.95 that tells you exactly what the experts have to say on the matter.

WOW three hours have gone by. You gave your business an extra hour tonight. You go to bed knowing you are one step closer to that million dollars.

Or are you?
The truth is many of us are addicted to the dream of becoming rich but lack the focus to make it a reality. Yes you can become a millionaire in two hours a night. You just have to stop following the junkies.

So you want to become a millionaire?

Anything, any product, can make money on the web. Just look around you everything is making money on the web. So pick one thing you are passionate about and stick to it. Don’t loose focus. Don’t change you mind until you have a least made your investment back on the product you have chosen to promote.

Its time for that magical 2 hours, you are going to do nothing but pure business building. Write yourself a list of what needs to be done in the next two hours that will make you money. Always ask yourself am I actively selling? The first two or three things you do should focus on making money with your product. If you never get to the selling how do you get to the making money?

If you want information on how to market over the Internet it is everywhere for free. Don’t pay for it you don’t have to. There is no big secret that someone hasn’t given away for free already. Ask questions, ask where, and ask how. And by the way do this on your own time not with the 2 hour business window.

If you want a marketing tool, like an autoresponder or a splash page, first look around and see who offers it for free. Use free tools until you see what is going to work for you and then upgrade as you start making money. So often we run out and pay for things we don’t use and just end up getting side tracked.

Focus
Focus on one thing
Focus on one thing right now
And you will soon be enjoying the millionaire lifestyle you set you sights on.

22 October 2007 - 3:46Rules of the Road when picking a killer Domain Name

(and yes rules can be broken)

• Easy to spell, we are talking for your average poor spelling 5th grader like myself.

• The shorter the better

• Never more than 5 syllables (This is the sequence of speech sounds, just clap your hands as you say the words. http://yourdomain.com your - do - main - name = 4 syllables.)

• If possible use key word search terms that describes your purpose.

• Only use .com unless you have found a brilliant use of .net or .info. A good example is the use of .us by del.icio.us, the social bookmarking site.

• Leave out the dashes and meaningless numbers. I own Time2Advertise.com. Every time give someone my web address I have to say, “Time the number 2 advertise .com that is t-i-m-e the number 2 a-d-e-r-v-i-s-e .com.” It is a pain. The only time I would say go with your number and dashes is if you can buy it both ways, with the dash and without.

• If given the choice go for edgy and memorable. People are often exposed to domain addresses when they don’t have the time or opportunity to commit the information to paper. Which would you remember - OyesUcan.com or FroggerBlogger.com?

• Domain names aren’t case sensitive in front of the .com so look at what capital letter will do for your business card.

• Always look at your name choice on paper. Legitimate sites for Speed of Art, Pen Island, Therapist Finder, can become a real joke when run together. speedofart.com penisland.com therapistfinder.com isn’t exactly what you set out to sell.

22 October 2007 - 3:457 things to think about while picking your domain name

1) Look for names in strange places. Now you’re not going to get threelittlepigs.com but I did have a marketer that tells his story of being a cab driver and how money is made in the meter drop. His philosophy that money is made by repetition lead me to buy NickelDrop.com.

2) The good news is owning domain names is like having money in the bank. I was at the New York toy show talking to a toy store owner. He was headed out to be wined and dined not by the toy manufactures but by someone wanting to buy his domain names. He had the foresight to grab up names like ChildrensSock.com and BoysPants.com.

3) Take a look at the search terms. Every month thousands of kids put in their Google search bar, Free Skateboard sticker, So my son bought FreeSkateBoardSticker.com. Does it mean he will come up first in the search engines? No, but it sure gives him a fighting chance.

4) Think twice about personalization. What is you ultimate goal. I was working with a nurse to set up her Legal Nurse Consulting site. We really looked at putting her name Joy into the URL. But the truth is she hopes to bring other nurses to work within her website and would like to have a business to sell some day. LNCaccess.com is a site you can sell. JoysLNC.com is not.

5) When you find a possible domain name always pop the name into a Google search. See what comes up in relation to your website name. When looking for a domain for a company that makes tabletop puppet theaters. I quickly learned any combination of the words, Puppet Master, was not a good name to associate a child’s toy site with. Even though Master of Puppets gets thousands of searches a month, I don’t think Metallica Fans will be buying The Three Bears puppets any time soon.

6) Be careful working around any other companies name or product. True story I joined a network marketing company (that’s not the shocking part) and like others ran to build a website around the company. Within a year the company desperate to survive reinvented itself with a new name. So yes, you guessed it; my website domain name became worthless overnight. One of my up-line had invested about $8,000 in website development only to have his website and domain rendered useless.

7) The best advice I can give you is to have some fun. Domain names are cheep, under $10 for a year. So relax, you don’t need one name to say it all. As a matter of a fact I would consider buying two or three names and really starting something big.

22 October 2007 - 3:41Have you see a Hycoty before?

Being a military wife I have traveled there and back again.

On one such trip the kids and I were out to see the Mid West, and were traveling along a particularly dark wooded highway.

My young son, (no doubt thinking of lions and tigers and bears - oh my) turned to his sister and said, “there are Icotes in these woods.”

My daughter, who was quick to point out her brother’s mistake, very smartly said, “no It’s not a Icote it’s a Hycoty.”

I tell you this little story because people often ask me where I got my business name -
HyCoty Corporation.

From the coyote in the woods and children with imagination : )

And now you know.
